People wanted more and just like you might have guessed, many people hated them but since that was the only choice they had to deal with it up until Discord came in May 2015.
Discord was able to fill the hole gamers felt while using TeamSpeak or Skype and people quickly realized it. They found out that on the app, they could talk to their friends whenever they wanted to and they could even talk about other things asides from the game which further strengthens their friendship or bond.
