NordVPN currently has one of the largest server networks. NordVPN has 5214 servers available in a total of 60 countries (on 6 continents) and this figure only comes second place to PIA (Private Internet Access) in terms of server count.
In today’s guide, I’ll be telling you all you need to about the NordVPN servers list, their location, states, and even types.
Are All These Pieces of Information Necessary?
Well, to answer this question, if you are interested in using a VPN it becomes confusing these days cause there are plenty of companies that provide VPN services, some free and some paid but just like when you want to purchase a smartphone some of the things you may probably pay attention to is the Ram, Battery life, Camera, Screen-to-body ratio, etc. Well, when it comes to VPNs, you may want to pay attention to the number of VPN server locations, and the number of servers.
Knowing about the number of server locations and server are important because it determines your connection speed. Confusing, right? Well, it’s quite simple, let’s say you patronize a VPN provider that has a relatively narrow network, you’d realize that each time you try connecting to or from an unusual location there’ll be a significant drop in connection speed and I’m sure no one enjoys a slow internet connection.
Hence, what you should look out for before selecting a VPN service of your choice should be one that has a good selection of well-populated locations. This ultimately means that with that VPN you won’t be experiencing slow network connections because the server locations aren’t far away and no single server will be overloaded with users.
Server Specialty Category, What Do They Mean?
NordVPN has been able to stay where it is today most likely because of its unique services. What do I mean by this? Just, like other top VPN services, NORDVPN has a large number of servers and server locations, but asides from these common features, they also have something known as Specialty Servers and I’ll be telling you what you should know about NordVPNs specialty servers.
Under NordVPNs specialty servers, you’ll find another subcategorization which includes the Standard Servers, Double VPN, Dedicated IP, Onion Over VPN, P2P Servers, and Obfuscated Servers. Continue reading to find out more about these specialty servers.
Standard Servers
The standard servers are the servers responsible for concealing your location and it’s able to achieve this by changing your IP. Additionally, asides from concealing your location, it also does the job of encrypting your internet traffic.
What does this mean? It simply means that each time you connect to one of the standard servers, you’ll appear under a different location on the internet irrespective of your actual location.
Double VPN
The Double VPN is what makes your internet connection much more secure and it does this by sending your internet traffic through two servers which makes it more difficult to trace your location. So if you are looking for an extra layer of protection when surfing the net then using the Double VPN is a good option as it encrypts your network twice.
Dedicated IP
With the average VPN service, once you connect, the IP is not dedicated to you alone because you’ll be sharing that connection with other users. This isn’t true for NordVPN because it has a dedicated IP which means that you’ll be given an IP that only you can use and this can improve your internet connection in several ways.
Asides from having a dedicated IP, you’ll also be entitled to some extra benefits and you’d be able to avoid blacklisting. However, this means you have to part with a few extra bucks if you want, and the locations are limited to only the US, UK, Germany, France, and the Netherlands.
Onion Over VPN
Onion Over VPN is simply an extra layer of Privacy and Security that’ll be added to your online activities.
How does the Onion Over VPN do this? What happens here is your internet traffic passes through one of their servers and afterward goes through an onion network before it reaches the internet. You can only access the Onion network with a type of browser known as Tor Browser (Onion Router) but NordVPN eliminates the need to download this browser, as all that’s needed is to just connect to the Onion over VPN.
P2P Servers
If you are the type that downloads a lot of files online using Torrents then using the P2P will provide you with the kind of security you need to carry that out successfully.
Sadly, though you won’t be able to use P2P in all the countries you can find in the NordVPN servers list because not all locations are totally safe, and to prevent exposing you, NordVPN has picked out the best locations where you can Torrent without having issues.
You’ll find out more about these locations in the list I’ll be providing below.
What is an Obfuscated Server and How Do You Turn It On?
Obfuscated servers are specialized VPN servers that do the job of masking the fact that you are using a VPN in order to reroute your traffic. What this means is that you’d be able to connect to the VPN in regions that highly prohibit the use of VPNs.
How do the Obfuscated Servers achieve this? It’s quite simple, the Obfuscated Servers allow one to browse in regions where there are heavy restrictions by masking your VPN traffic into HTTPS traffic which hides the fact that you are using a VPN and will protect you from ISP and government surveillance.
Now, you understand what Obfuscated Servers are, what’s left is learning how to turn them on. Continue reading to learn how to turn on the Obfuscated Server feature.
- Open the NordVPN app.
- Go to the Settings menu which is found at the top right corner of your screen.
- On the Settings menu, navigate to Advanced and under Advanced, turn on Obfuscated Servers.
Once you have turned on this feature, you’d realize that the Obfuscated Servers will now be found at the left panel under the specialty servers.

What is a NordVPN Server Picker and How Does it Work?
The NordVPN server picker is a feature within the app that automatically makes a suggestion for you (known as the best pick) and it makes these suggestions based on your present location. What this means is based on the information gotten from your location, it’ll be able to select the best server for you to connect to at that moment in order to achieve the best experience while surfing the net using NordVPN.
The NordVPN does this by pinpointing your location through your IP address and then goes ahead to find a nearby server you can use in your country and if there is none, it selects one from a neighboring country.
One similar feature to the NordVPN server picker is the Quick Connect button. This button automatically connects you to an optimized nearby server for a better experience.
Note: with a nearby server (especially one in your country) you’ll be able to access local content and the chances of your internet speed dropping (changing) are low. You may not be able to access foreign content from a geoblocked site but you’ll be anonymous while surfing the net.
What are NordVPN DNS Servers and How Do They Work?
The DNS (Domain Name System) servers in simple terms is a means through which your web browser interacts with your internet protocol (IP) address. What do I mean by this? Well, it’s simple. Do you know how you go through your phonebook to look for a particular number before placing a call? The DNS does the job of translating the domain names (eg. CNN.com) to IP addresses to enable the browser to load internet resources.
You should know that every device has an IP address that is unique to that device alone through which it connects to the internet and other machines can find that device through its IP. DNS servers help humans eliminate the need to memorize addresses such as the IPV4 (192.168.1.1) and even complex addresses like the IPV6 (2400:cb00:2048:1::c629:d7a2) with contains alphanumeric IP addresses.
In order to prevent DNS leaks, NordVPN uses its distinct servers. NordVPN DNS server addresses are 103.86.96.100 and 103.86.99.100, and these addresses are automatically used by the native app which is an exception for those who installed NordVPN through a third-party app for these set of individuals, you’d have to configure your DNS servers manually. You can learn how to manually configure your NordVPN DNS Server Here.
Before you leave, I’ll be teaching you as a bonus “how you can change the servers on your Amazon Fire TV.” Continue reading to learn how to do this.
NordVPN and Amazon Fire TV
Changing servers on the Amazon Fire TV has always not been easy and it’s even more tasking when you are still using a first-generation Amazon Fire TV. If you want to change the server on your Amazon fire smart TV but haven’t been able to do so, you can now with NordVPN. To do this on your Amazon Fire TV, follow the steps outlined below:
“Install NordVPN on your Amazon Fire Smart TV.
Toggle through the menu to reveal the server list.
You’ll find the Quick Connect button on the Home Page, use your remote control to navigate through the menu. There you’ll find All Countries through which you can select a standard server or you can choose to select the specialty servers.”
In conclusion, changing your servers on the Amazon Fire TV becomes relatively easy when using NordVPN. If you notice that you are experiencing some difficulties while using your remote to change your server on the NordVPN app, you can try the Mouse Toggle for Fire TV.
