This is a guide on 3 ways to message a number on WhatsApp without adding them as a contact first. WhatsApp is a free instant messaging platform. The cross-platform messaging and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service is owned by Facebook, Inc. WhatsApp began operation in May 2009 and boasts about having more than 2 billion users in over 180 countries.
The messaging app allows users to send text messages and voice messages, make voice and video calls, and share images, documents, user locations, and other media. Initially, WhatsApp attracted a yearly fee but currently, WhatsApp is a free app for iPhones, Android smartphones, Windows Phone, and Mac laptops and Windows PC on emulators.
To start messaging on WhatsApp, a user has to download the app and activate their mobile number as there is no username, ID or pin associated with the messaging app. After activating WhatsApp, you’ll be able to message anyone on your contacts list – as long as they’re also using the messaging service. Anyone with your phone number can also send you a message and you get it in real-time. Although WhatsApp has been widely used for years, the messaging service only allows users to chat with their contacts.
If you want to reach out to someone who hasn’t sent you a message before and you don’t have them on your contact list, you’ll be required to save their contact to your contacts list, open WhatsApp and wait for it to sync. After the synchronization process, the new name would show up inside the app. You can then start a conversation with them.
These processes would take several minutes and could often go on for hours before the contact syncs successfully. However, with any of the following 3 ways to message a number on WhatsApp without adding them as a contact first, you’re set to start messaging people without adding them to your contact list.
Using WhatsApp’s wa.me link
With the launch of the WhatsApp Business, the platform introduced a link for businesses on WhatsApp to get contacted easily without clients saving numbers to their address book first. However, using the normal WhatsApp, won’t stop other WhatsApp users from contacting you through the link if your number is added to it. WhatsApp explained in one of their Frequently Asked Questions that you can start a chat with any WhatsApp activated number by opening any browser of your choice and going to the web address formatted like this – https://wa.me/phonenumber. All you have to do is to replace the last part of the address (phone number) with the full number you want to send a message to. The number should include the country and region code as its prefix without the + sign and the () or the 00.
For example, if you need to message someone with the number +1-234-567-8900, all you need to use the URL – https://wa.me/12345678900. Once you visit that on your browser, you’ll be taken to a web page with a big green “message” icon below. Tapping on the icon will open up a conversation with the number on WhatsApp. Note that the number you want to chat with must be using the WhatsApp service for you to be able to message them.
Using A Third-Party App
If you’re too lazy to use the link above in a browser, You can also use a third-party app to speed things up. On the Google Play store, there are several Android apps that use the wa.me links in a non-user-facing way. This means that you’re not required to type in the URL or use any web browser before messaging an unsaved number. You just have to enter the number, tap a button, and start a new chat on WhatsApp. Among the numerous available apps, sits the Click to Chat and Easy Message that is without ads and requires very little to almost no permissions to message a contact.
Text selection and app actions
The third and final way of messaging a number that’s not part of your contacts happens to be the fastest and best integrated. All you have to do is select a number appearing in an app, and check the actions suggested. To select a number, tap on the number and hold for some seconds till you notice a blue or green color masking the number. You can then use the suggested actions. The main ones are Call, Cut, Copy, Paste. You can then find other options enclosed in the overflow button (the three dots) and you should see many other options including sending a WhatsApp message. If you select the send WhatsApp message section, you would be taken to WhatsApp to start a conversation with the individual.
